The Art of Ingrid Capozzoli Flinn

Artist's Statement

I grew up in an Italian and Polish Catholic family in the suburbs of Detroit in the 60's where I had the kinds of experiences that crossed Old World customs with a new American suburban culture.   I remember receiving a Barbie doll for Christmas the very same year I was given a painted plaster religious statue of the Virgin Mary for my First Holy Communion.   These two female icons symbolize the contrasting concepts of women that have shaped my understanding of myself along with my love of traditional figurative art that I relentlessly explore in drawing, painting and digital media.

The process of developing each work conveys my sheer pleasure of the simultaneous building up of the material and the form as the metaphorical quality of the medium translates into light articulating the subtle contours of the female body. What it may lacks in drama and impact, it pushes to the extreme in subtlety, nuance and levels of meaning that represent the contrasting experiences of life.

Since moving to New York over five years ago, I have been influenced by the edginess of living in the city and exposed to new idea about art, multiple ethnic neighborhoods and cultural identities.   This has added richness to the imagery and a more expressive quality to the material, as I become more and more interested in painting as a form of visual poetry.
